You worked super hard on creating a slick landing page, but it’s not performing as you where hoping. Does this describe your situation?
Let’s take a look at 5 types of landing page conversion killers. Avoid these mistakes, and your chances of creating a high-converting page will dramatically increase.
1. A Dull Headline
A headline is one of the most important part of your landing page. It’s your 2 second chance to win someone over to stop and read more about what you have to offer. If you don’t have a headline that meets a visitor’s expectation and that does not further entice them, be prepared to have low conversion rates.
2. Asking for More Than 1 Thing
For an effective landing page you need to only ask your users to do only 1 action. Physiological tests have indicated that when people are given multiple options they end up not making a choice at all. Make sure you make it clear what 1 thing you want your end user to do. This might be subscribing to an email list or viewing your new product or service.
3. Are You Using Meaningless Graphics?
Scrap irrelevant illustrations. Boring stock photography and incomprehensible icons may hurt your conversion rates. Make sure graphics are relevant and professionally done. Reducing the size of meaningless icons helped one company increase their conversion rates by over 100%.
4. Too Much Content
Let’s face it. People don’t have long attention spans and don’t like reading more than a couple paragraphs. Most visitors coming to your landing page are skimming and skipping through your content. The key is to make it easy for people to get the point without having to read too much. Keep your most important points at the beginning of paragraphs and bullets.
5. Over Hyping Details
Even the most honest people, often without trying, get caught into exaggerating some details to make the statement sound better. A statement gets a little exaggerated to sound a bit more convincing. Its just like all those great big fish tales you hear from your uncle that sound too good to be real. You don’t want to come across as a sleazy salesman trying to make a fast sale. Its best to be genuine. Tone down exaggerated phrases and write honest sale statements. You would be surprised how fast people can tell if someone is trying to make a fast sale or genuinely trying to help them out.
